Welcome to the Strachur Medical Practice weblog

Well, here I am with my family arrived at Strachur from Inverness to take over the practice from Dr Basu.

I thought it would be a good idea to keep a blog of my time in Strachur*, which will hopefully be of some interest to patients (or anyone else!).

This way patients will be able to get an idea of the background to the changes that we are going to make, and any plans that we have for improving the service in the future.

It also allows patients to discuss the way their surgery functions with their GP in an informal way.

I hope you find it useful.

*obviously this blog will be non-confidential matters, such as personal experiences in the area, but mainly the running of the practice.

Before you didn't attend unless you were dying Now you look forward to attending as there is a welcoming atmosphere, a light and airy waiting room, hanging baskets to enjoy on the way in and an informal doctor who is not afraid to touch you! Introduction
The Strachur Medical Practice is a single handed GP practice. We are a dispensing practice, which means that patients can receive their medication from the practice dispensary.

Out of Hours / Emergencies
NHS24 provides Out of Hours cover for patients of the practice.
In an emergency, call the surgery on (01369) 860 224.
keep a pencil handy in case you need to follow ansaphone instructions

If you are unable to contact the
surgery for any reason:
in dire emergency dial 999 and ask for ambulance
or for urgent assistance call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24

Our practice area
The practice area lies from the Rest and Be Thankful in the north to half way down Loch Eck and nearly to Otter Ferry to the south.
There is a practice area map, mounted on the wall in the practice next to the waiting room, which has the practice boundaries drawn on it.

Surgery opening hours
The surgery is open from 9am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm weekdays, except Wednesday half-day when the practice closes at 1pm.
The GP consults by appointment, usually between 9am-11.30am and 3.30pm-6pm weekdays (half-day Wednesday). Patients are seen by appointment, but we have open-ended access so people will always get seen the same day if they need to.
To book an appointment, please phone the main practice number (860224).

Repeat Prescriptions and Dispensing
We issue most repeat prescriptions monthly with a re-order slip. Please re-order your repeat medications at least 2 working days in advance. This allows us to order your medication from our wholesaler and carry out our safety checks.
You can hand your re-order slip in to reception, post it to us, put it through our letterbox by hand, or fax it to us on 01369 860225.
If you misplace your repeat slip, you can ask at reception for a replacement.
For safety reasons, please avoid ordering repeat medications by telephone.
We are a dispensing practice, so you can collect your medication from the practice dispensary hatch during normal opening hours.

Home Visits
Some patients are too frail or unwell to travel to the surgery even for routine care. In such cases, please call the surgery to let us know that a visit may be required.
Please note that we discourage home visits for anything other than terminal care or medical emergencies.
Home visits are a poor use of GP time, meaning less time for other patients, it is difficult to provide high quality modern health care outside the surgery, and there is a higher risk of medical errors.
Visits are therefore only carried out where the GP decides that a visit is clinically justified.

How to register
To join the practice, simply ask at reception for a Registration Form. Complete and return the form, with your NHS Medical Card if you have it (if you don't, the reception staff can get a new one for you). We will then arrange for your notes to be sent from your old GP, and you will be asked to come and see our practice nurse for a registration medical.

Chest Pain Advice
An ache in the middle of the chest, like someone sitting on your chest?
Ache that goes into your neck/jaw/left arm?
You may have shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or you may look pale or grey.
If you get these symptoms, sit down and rest.
If your doctor has prescribed an angina spray, use it.
If you still have symptoms after resting for 5 minutes, then this could be a HEART ATTACK - call for help immediately.
Heart attacks can be treated, but the greatest risk of death is in the first hour, so it is vital you call for help as soon as possible.
